“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.”

Mother Teresa

So many words. The world is filled with so many words. It’s post election week in the US. In the Netherlands there is a court case against one of the populist party leaders. People keep speaking words that hurt. In the discussion, debates, articles, news items. I don’t know anymore what to say. That is why this week I was thankful for all the pictures of the sunsets and sunrises that everyone posted all over social media.

Sunshine and sunsets don’t talk. They just appear. Every single day. With the days getting shorter, it’s easier to catch them on camera. The sun rises and sets. From the perspective of our eyes. Actually the sun is as set in the sky as a stone. Our beautiful planet is turning around the sun. It happens. We don’t feel it. We don’t control it. It happens.

Sometimes I wish the world would just shut up. Just keep quiet. Without words. Just be still and listen. Feel the world turn. As I see the first morning sunlight on my piano, I just take a moment to enjoy the light. The warm and bright light that simply is there without sound. Slowly moving and  telling me that the world keeps turning. Asking me if I can take a moment to be still and listen to sounds of silence.
