A dear friend of mine recently started her own creative company. Okay, a company is maybe a bit of a fancy word, since a living room table functions as her desk and she only just started with her creations. This weekend she is going to sell at her first market in Utrecht. Fur box filled with little bits of a dream is ready to be shared with the world.
After some tea and time to talk this afternoon, I went back home. In the train I had some time to think about why I am so happy that Ella L. exists. And I get to share my favourite Paulo Coelho quotes from the Alchemist with you!
Reason no. 1 – Make a dream happen!
If you want something, you will have to go after it. It won’t just appear or get there by itself. Making a dream happen is hard work. It takes time, effort and patience. I think we tend to have a romantic ideas about dreaming. It’s something of the imagination, far away and almost unreachable. Dreams are like fairy tale princess weddings. Beautiful, yet not really grounded in reality. However dreams are much more than imagination. Real dreams are visions, hopes, plans and ideas all combined. It’s doing what your heart loves to do most. It’s filling in a gap in the world. It’s adding something that makes you truly happy.
“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure. … It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”
Reason no. 2 – Keep it small and simple.
What I love about each piece, is it’s simplicity. We both have small hands and small ears and small wrists. So the one-size-fits-all kind of stuff isn’t really what fits with our bodies. We share a love for small things. A tree with blossoms, dry socks after walking through a field of wet grass or a piece of fruit for along the way. Her pieces of jewelry are exactly that. Like little moments and memories. They are unique, almost always perfect, and made the way you want them to be. Custom-designed and hand-made. Small and simple. Yet incredibly powerful.
“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.”
Reason no. 3 – Love what you do.
Creating small and simple jewelry and making your dream happen, wouldn’t be a reality if this beautiful woman wouldn’t love what she does. I’ve lived with her for a while, known her for a while longer, yet it almost seems that this is the first time she is really inspired by what she is doing. It’s a choice to love what you do. Even on the days that you are demotivated, when it doesn’t work the way you want it to work or when it all seems to make no difference. Loving what you do is key. Life doesn’t always have to be hard. She reminds me of that constantly. Right now I am struggling with big ideas and thoughts about what to do with my life and which path to choose, she admits when she is tired too. She asks about the details of how I am feeling, helping to work out my own thoughts. I feel that starting that company has made her more aware of what it is that she loves. And that is exactly what you see when you see her creations. Little treasures with a tiny piece of her heart.
“Why do we have to listen to our hearts?” the boy asked.
“Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you will find your treasure.”
